Summer Wig Survival Guide: How to Protect Your Human Hair Wig Investment This Season

During the summer, we're making making memories . I'm talking brunch, cookouts and bbq's, movies under the stars - you name it. Unfortunately, it also brings heat, humidity, and sweat, that can potentially shorten the lifespan of your wig if you're not careful.
But there's good news: with proper care, your human hair wig can remain beautiful and last for years.

If you've invested in a premium wig, protecting that it should be part of your summer routine. Here's your complete guide to summer wig care.

Why Summer Wig Care Matters

Summer conditions can be tough on any hair, including wigs. The common challenges include:

  • Increased sweat and oil buildup
  • Humidity and frizz
  • Sun exposure
  • Salt water and chlorine exposure
  • More frequent wear
  • Travel related tangling and friction

Without the proper maintenance, all of these can make your wig dry, dull, and difficult to manage. Fortunately for you, I'm sharing a few simple habits that can make a significant difference.

1. Wash Your Wig More Frequently During Summer

Your wig may require more frequent washing than during cooler months because summer weather often means imore product buildup.
For most human hair wigs, if you wear your wig just about every day, it is important to was every 7-10 wear and wash every 10-15 wears for lighter wig wears. Remember to use sulfate-free, moisturizing products designed for wigs or color-treated hair and that overwashing can shorten the life of your wig, so aim for balance.

2. Manage Humidity Before It Manages You

Humidity is one of the biggest concerns for whether you wear wigs or not. Thankfully, human hair wigs, depending on the texture, generally respond better than many natural hairstyles when properly maintained.

To reduce humidity issues:

  • Avoid excessive styling products.
  • Store your wig properly between wears.
  • Use anti-frizz products sparingly.
  • Avoid excessive heat styling whenever possible.

A simple maintenance routine can help preserve your style throughout the day.

3. Keep Your Wig Dry After Sweating

Sweat during the summer is unavoidable. After wearing your wig:

  • Remove it when you return home.
  • Allow it to air dry completely.
  • Store it only after the wig has completely dried to prevent a must odor

4. Take Extra Care Around Pools and Beaches

Chlorine and salt water can be harsh on human hair wigs. But if swimming is part of your plans:

  • Wear a snug fitting swim cap
  • Wear a "swim wig". A wig that you've designated specifically for the pool

5. Travel Smart With Your Wig

Summer for sure means travel. To keep your wig looking its best while away from home:

  • Pack it in a protective silk or satin bag.
  • Bring a wide-tooth comb.
  • Pack a small maintenance kit.
  • Avoid crushing the wig under heavy luggage.

A few extra minutes of preparation can save hours of restyling later.

6. Rotate Your Wigs When Possible

Daily wear of the same wig reduces it's longevity. If you own multiple wigs, rotating between them allows each to get a break and can extend it's overall longevity. Everything lasts longer with proper care.

7. Store Your Wig Properly Every Night

We've all done this, myself included, but leaving your wig just anywhere after wearing it, is not going to make the cut. Proper storage is one of the easiest ways to maintain your wig's shape and appearance.

You'll want to:

  • Use a wig stand when possible.
  • Storing them in a cool, dry environment.
  • Brushing gently before storage.

Your Wig Is an Investment So Yes, Treat It Like One

A human hair wig is more than a beauty purchase. It's an investment in how you the look, the convenience it gives, and time saved. With proper summer wig care, your wig can continue looking as good as when you first purchased it.
