How To Protect and Care for Your Wig

How To Protect and Care for Your Wig

Care for Me, Baby

Girl, the wig you just bought is a whole investment. You didn’t spend several hundred dollars to have it on and off your head only to treat it like a dust mop. With proper care and maintenance, you will be sure to get the most out of your luxury wig purchase, prolonging it’s lifespan.

Here are a few tips we’ll call Wig Commandments, on how to properly protect and care for your wig.

1)         Thou Shalt Not Treat Your Wig Like a Dust Mop
We’ve all been guilty of tossing our wig on the nearest countertop or bed when we first get home or is it just me? This year, let’s treat our wigs like it’s our most prized possession (because it is) and store it on a mannequin or wig hook. Be sure to admire the beauty from afar and say to yourself, “damn, this was one hell of an investment, and I will treat it as such.”

2)         Thou Shalteth Not Whip and Wash Your Hair Back and Forth
Like all hair, wigs need washing too. But what you’re not gonna do is wash it how your great grandmother used to wash your grandmother's hair.  My grandmom told me that she thought her neck  popped after her mom washed her hair. I didn’t say anything at the time but her neck does look a little bit off yall but that’s a story for another day! The key to a good wash consists of the right products and how you wash it. For virgin hair wigs, Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo or Aussie shampoo and Silicon Mix conditioner works like a charm. I’ll come back with recs for products to wash and condition Raw hair in a bit.

To wash, gently stroke the hair from root to ends. Do not twist or whip hair back and forth. Rinse until the water runs clear and to condition, apply product liberally throughout. Blot dry to remove excess water.

3)         Thou Shalt Be Patient and Let That Jawn Dry
Wash DAY is really a thing so yes you’ve washed your hair and yes you will chill for the day to let it air dry. Unless you have another unit, take this time to marvel at the investment you made and think about how you’ll style your hair once it’s dry.

FINALLY:
Be mindful of the heat settings on your hot tools. Silk pressing your unit every day on 450° is a recipe for heat damaged tresses. You’ll be on kingdombeautycare.com looking to buy your next wig, but hey, that’s fine by me. If you do apply heat, we love Turn Up the Heat by Beyond the Zone. It smells ahhhmazing!

Avoid boiling and microwaving your wig, and a crap load of chemicals that’ll decrease it’s longevity, especially if you have little to no experience. I promise you, I have heard all about the microwaving and boiling of human hair extensions.

When in doubt, treat your hair extensions like it is the real hair coming from your real scalp. Take care of it. Love on it and it shalt last a long time.

After reading this you are now KB Certified at taking proper care of your units. If you tried these techniques and all has failed, here’s code WIGSRV10 for 10% off our Wig Service - Refresh and Wig Service - Reconstruction.

Peace and Weave Grease!
